Pre-feasibility Study: Biomethanol Synthesis Plant at the Maserot Site (BL)
Client: La Dolomiti Ambiente SpA
Services in this project:
- Design of industrial plants supporting the energy transition in the transport sector
The project consists of a pre-feasibility study for the conversion of the Maserot site, located in the province of Belluno, into a biorefinery. The idea is to use green hydrogen in combination with carbon dioxide derived from the gasification of wet waste in order to produce biomethanol. The study was carried out in the following phases:
- estimation of the plant’s production volumes in terms of carbon dioxide, in order to determine the hydrogen flow rate required for biomethanol synthesis;
- assessment of the CO₂ separation and purification system from the mass flow of the biogas production plant located on site, in synergy with its upgrading to biomethane for its injection in the gas transmission network;
- analysis and evaluation of the process for converting renewable electricity into hydrogen, through the usage of a properly sized electrolysis module, including compression and storage of both the hydrogen and oxygen produced. Determination of the average energy cost, CAPEX, and OPEX;
- quantification of mass and thermal flows required for the synthesis and purification of biomethanol, along with related economic assessment (CAPEX and OPEX);
- profitability analysis with estimation of the project’s economic return and evaluation of the final selling price of biomethanol.
