TOS software for the Intermodal Terminal at Interporto di Parma
Client: CEPIM SpA
Services in this project:
- Installation, testing, commissioning, and go-live support
- Integration with external systems
- I-TOS platform configuration
- Delivery of the system in Cloud mode (SaaS)
The project concerns the supply and implementation of a Terminal Operating System (TOS) for the operational management of the new rail terminal at Interporto di Parma, a strategic infrastructure for the development of national intermodal logistics.
The system is designed to support the integrated management of rail and road flows, contributing to the digitalization of the logistics chain in line with the objectives of the PNRR and the National Logistics Platform (PLN).
The intervention improves logistics process efficiency, reduces operational times, and enables interoperability with supply chain actors (MTOs, road hauliers, digital platforms).
The project involved the implementation of the I-TOS (Intermodal Terminal Operating System) platform for the complete management of intermodal terminal operations, with the aim of digitalizing and integrating rail and road processes.
The solution covers the entire terminal operational cycle, including inbound and outbound train management, train composition, intermodal loading unit (UTI) planning and control, yard and storage management, and gate-in/gate-out operations. The system also enables real-time monitoring and traceability of units, supporting operators through dedicated mobile applications for field operations and crane handling.
Key distinguishing features include synchronized rail-road flow management (synchromodality), a high level of interoperability with external systems and logistics standards (PLN, eFTI, MTO, TMS), as well as integration with gate automation systems. The project also addressed operational challenges during the go-live phase, managed through structured on-site support and dedicated operational assistance.
Technologies and standards used
The solution is based on DBA’s proprietary I-TOS platform, developed with a web-based multi-user architecture and delivered in Cloud SaaS mode.
The system integrates advanced interoperability functionalities via EDI (EDIGES) and APIs, and is connected to ERP systems (SAP Business One) and TMS platforms for end-to-end logistics process management. The platform also includes a Vehicle Booking System (VBS) for truck access reservations and integration modules with gate automation systems (GOS).
The solution complies with major logistics and digital standards, including PLN, eFTI, and eCMR, and includes Android mobile applications for field operations. Development was carried out using an Agile methodology.
Benefits and results
The project enabled the full digitalization of a new intermodal terminal’s processes, improving operational efficiency and integrated management of rail-road freight flows.
The platform contributed to reducing waiting times and optimizing logistics processes, increasing traceability and visibility of loading units across the entire supply chain. Integration between rail operators, road transport providers, and information systems improved operational coordination and supported the terminal’s digital interoperability.
The system is also designed to ensure scalability and continuous evolution, supporting the introduction of new modules and future functionalities.
