TOS software for the Verona intermodal terminal
Client: Quadrante Servizi
Services in this project:
- TOS system design
- Customization of the I-TOS platform
- Integration with external systems
- User training
The project concerns the supply and implementation of a Terminal Operating System (TOS) for the INTERTERMINAL intermodal facility of the ZAI Consortium, operated by Quadrante Servizi in Verona.
The intervention arose from the need to replace heterogeneous and non-fully integrated legacy systems with a unified digital platform capable of efficiently managing a high volume of rail traffic (over 38 train pairs per week) and supporting integration with international logistics operators (e.g., Kombiverkehr).
The project represents a key step in the terminal’s digital transformation, enabling process automation and end-to-end traceability of loading units.
The project involved the implementation of the proprietary I-TOS platform, an advanced TOS system for the end-to-end management of rail and road terminal processes. The solution is based on a microservices architecture with a centralized database and web and mobile interfaces accessible via browsers and operational devices.
The system covers the entire terminal operational lifecycle, including booking management, EDI data exchange via EDIGES, planning and operational management (back office), yard operations via mobile app, and performance monitoring through KPI dashboards and advanced reporting. Functionalities include full management of rail import/export flows, track & trace of loading units, gate-in/gate-out operations with document control, train composition, and damage detection with photographic support.
Key distinguishing features include EDI integration with international rail operators, a “single window” approach for data sharing, migration from complex legacy systems, and the introduction of operational mobility via rugged devices. The project also included a progressive release of functionalities and a structured change management process.
Technologies and standards used
The I-TOS platform is developed using a microservices architecture based on .NET Core backend technologies, Angular frontend, SQL Server database management, and RabbitMQ as a message broker for asynchronous communication.
Integration with external systems is enabled through EDI EDIGES standards, web services (SOAP/REST, XML), and file exchange formats (CSV, XLS), with support for M2M integrations and third-party logistics systems. Security is ensured through HTTPS, SSL protocols, and multi-level authentication.
Development was carried out using Agile methodology, with a focus on scalability and modularity of the platform.
Benefits and results
The project enabled the full digitalization of the terminal’s operational processes, improving efficiency in train management and intermodal loading unit (UTI) handling.
The solution reduced operational errors through process automation and alerting systems, increasing real-time visibility of terminal activities. Integration with logistics and rail partners improved operational coordination across the supply chain.
The system also supports traffic volume growth and ensures scalability, data centralization, and advanced control, monitoring, and reporting capabilities.
