The project has concerned the redevelopment of the bulk material terminal with particular attention to the existing quay, the refurbishment of the yard, the construction of a new rainwater drainage network and a new treatment plant (SIN area – SITO INTERESSE NAZIONALE).

At the feasibility stage, an environmental characterization of the site was carried out to achieve full knowledge of soils and groundwater at different depths.

The design activities include:

  • Elevation of the root yard whose ground level is currently 1 m below the surrounding area;
  • Paving of the yards and remaking of the road signs;
  • Refurbishment of the utilities networks (electrical, lighting, fire protection) and installation of an intrusion detection system.

The rainwater drainage system consists of a pipe network which collects and carries waters to a pumping station which raises the water, flowing through a screen, up to a tank where the first 5 mm of any rainfall is separated and stored. This water will be treated within 48 hours. It will be subject to a process of sedimentation, desolation and filtering, in compliance with the Italian law.

The further rainfall will be stored in a settling tank for as long as it takes to the sand and oil particles, potentially present in the run-off rainwater, to sediment for gravity before being discharged into the sea.
